Vahan Khalafyan

The authorities bear the responsibility for the death of Vahan Khalafyan. The investigation of his case was initially carried out unilaterally.

About Vahan Khalafyan

On April 13, 2010 a tragic incident occurred that shook the entire community in Charentsavan, Armenia. The terrible act of injustice happened to Vahan Khalafyan, whose life was cut short within the walls of a police station. 24-year-old Vahan Khalafyan faced suspicion of theft, leading to his detention at the Charentsavan police station. Despite not confessing, he experienced abuse from officers.

Tragically, his family received news of his death a few hours later. Armenia's authorities neglected to protect Khalafyan's rights, breaching the prohibition of torture and the right to life during his unlawful detention.

This heartbreaking event sparked a wave of outrage and sorrow, but also ignited a powerful movement for change.

Anahit Khalafyan "April 13: The End and the Beginning"

10 years later, Anahit, Vahan's sister, chose to write about what happened during that time. "The book was a way to release the revenge that was building up in me. For a decade, I lived with revenge in my heart, waking up every day with it. Through the book, I could confront myself first." Anahit Khalafyan's book, "April 13: The End and the Beginning," tells the real story of her brother Vahan.
